Waterbeach Community Primary School Win Award Working with Museums
School Wins Award!
Year 5 and 6 pupils at Waterbeach Community Primary School have won the
Cambridgeshire Young Persons History Award presented by The Cambridgeshire Local History Association for their project:
“CONFLICT & COMMUNITY: The lasting legacy of
Waterbeach RAF Station & Barracks”
Led by The Farmland Museum & Denny Abbey
In partnership with Waterbeach Barracks Museum
Following a successful Big Lottery funding bid made by the Farmland Museum co-ordinated by Elly Wright and Oliver Merrington, ninety Year 5 and 6 pupils at Waterbeach Primary School have written and designed an exhibition based on the experiences they have had during this project. They visited the Waterbeach Barracks (the former airfield) and the two museums, interviewed soldiers and airmen both former and current; worked with artist Ann Biggs to produce commemorative artworks; worked with a museum professional Gilly Vose to design the exhibition; and much more in between. A documentary film about this project has also been created by students from Cottenham Village College working with a local filmmaker, Peter Harmer.
The exhibition is currently on display at the Waterbeach Barracks Museum, following its launch in December 2009 at the primary school. The museum is open from April to September by appointment only, on application to the Guardroom (01223 204421).
The Cambridgeshire Young Persons History Awards were introduced by The Cambridgeshire Local History Society in an attempt to encourage and support the study of all aspects of the Eastern Region’s archaeology and history by its young people. The Awards were first presented in 2007. For more information go to http://www.calh.org.uk/awards1.htm
